Photography Composition Workshop
The purpose of this workshop is to teach beginners how to compose a beautiful and intentional photograph — using either a smartphone or a camera.
We will learn to see photographically, focusing on the artistic side of photography rather than technical settings. Perfect for anyone interested in travel, documentary, or people photography.
Price: 40€ (IVA included)
Private or group classes available on request
By studying and practicing four essential compositional elements, you’ll gain a clear understanding of what makes a photograph compelling and how to create stronger, more expressive images.
Workshop Program
Part 1: Seeing and Understanding Composition
You’ll study a curated selection of photographs that demonstrate strong compositional principles.
You’ll learn how to recognise and apply these elements in your own work, regardless of what camera you use.
Part 2: Photographic Walk — Practice and Discovery
With your smartphone or camera, we’ll head out for a guided photographic walk through the arts district around the studio in Baixa, Porto.
This hands-on session emphasizes observation, framing, and creative exploration.
Part 3: Peer Review and Image Selection
Back in the studio, we’ll gather for a friendly peer critique and discussion.
Each student will present their photographs, and together we’ll select the strongest image that best demonstrates a key compositional element.
Part 4: Editing Demonstration
Mark will then demonstrate his photo editing workflow, showing how subtle adjustments in tone, color, and cropping can enhance the final image while staying true to the original composition.
Although this workshop focuses on composition rather than post-production, this brief session offers insight into how professional photographers refine their work.
Part 5: After The Workshop
After class, Mark will select the best single photograph from each student, personally edit it, and produce an A5 fine art print on premium photographic paper in the studio.
Students are invited to return to the gallery a few days later to pick up their finished print.
What You’ll Gain:
- A clear understanding of four fundamental compositional elements
- Hands-on practice applying them in real-world settings
- Insight into how professional photographers edit and refine images
- A fine art print of your own work to take home
Discover how to see like a photographer — and transform the way you capture the world around you.
