Workshop Program

Part 1: Introduction to Film & Loading Your Camera

We’ll begin by looking at different types of black & white film and their distinct looks and characteristics.
You’ll learn how to load your film and prepare your camera for shooting.

Part 2: Understanding Exposure

Learn how to properly expose your film for perfect negatives.
We’ll cover the essentials of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO — and how they work together to create a balanced exposure.
You’ll also learn how to use your camera’s built-in light meter (or a handheld or smartphone meter) and practice taking accurate light readings through hands-on exercises.

Part 3: The Creative Use of Light

Once you understand exposure, we’ll explore how to see and use light creatively.
You’ll learn to recognize interesting light and shadow, use window light for portraits, and understand the difference between flat and contrasty light.
We’ll also discuss how the time of day and direction of light influence mood and atmosphere.

Part 4: Composition and Visual Storytelling

We’ll explore several classic compositional techniques that make photographs more intentional and engaging.
These ideas will help you develop a more thoughtful and deliberate approach to photographing your subjects.

Part 5: Putting It All Into Practice

We’ll begin with a window-lit portrait exercise in the studio, working in pairs to practice using natural light.
Then, we’ll head outdoors for a photo walk — experimenting with street photography, environmental portraits, and architecture while applying your new exposure and composition skills.
By the end of the session, each student will have shot a full roll of 35mm film.

Part 6: Q&A and Wrap-Up

We’ll finish with an open discussion, review key takeaways, and rewind and label your films for processing.

Part 7: After the Workshop — Processing and Scanning

After class, your film will be hand-processed, professionally scanned at high resolution, and returned with your negatives and digital files — a full record of your first analog photography experience.

What You’ll Gain

  • A solid understanding of how to expose and work with black & white film
  • The ability to recognize and use natural light creatively
  • A more intentional approach to composition and subject matter
